Our community

Since 2003, over 1500 children have helped to grow and build community within our artists’ studio, and there is a strong shared, inherited culture of caring and working together. We are also part of our wider school community – children, families, teachers, staff, leaders.

Hareclive is in Hartcliffe and Withywood and Room 13 has a very strong sense of place. Although Bristol centre is close – a few miles – many families do not own a car and bus travel is expensive. As a result, many children have not been to the city and families are disconnected from the art, culture, history, opportunities, health and other services there, and even from families and friends living in other parts of the city.

Hartcliffe is a very green estate, on the edge of fields and Dundry Slopes. Children feel nature is around them. However many children do not use these spaces much or play outside with friends in the ways they would like because there are too many barriers.

Over the years, Room 13 children have had many creative ideas to improve the local community and done lots of work with other children, families and local people to put these out into the world. Room 13 connects children up to the city through projects, trips, visits and work with other organisations. Our studio champions the brilliant creativity, work and voice of children from Hartcliffe.

Room 13 is important to us because it gives children like me in Hartcliffe an opportunity to use our skills, discover what we can do, be professional and really run a project for lots of people to use.”
