The building

Room 13 Hareclive has its own RIBA award-winning, purpose built studio in the playground of Hareclive school. We started out in a classroom in the school. The 2003-6 Management Teams then worked with the artist in residence, school and local community on a big European funding bid to build a separate studio space. They presented our case to the funders – and won!

In true Room 13 style, the team were involved from the beginning, co-writing a brief for the Architect Piers Taylor, being part of decision-making meetings and documenting the building work through photography. They also met with builders, project managers, RIBA judges and funders. The building was finished and launched by Room 13 in 2006 with a BIG party.

The success of Room 13… is a demonstration of Bristol at its best – proud, creative, and confidant in building a cultural legacy for generations to come. Room 13 instantly warmed my heart. It demonstrates that architecture is more than anything about people.
— Andy Corp, RIBA
One of the most inspiring projects… and one of my favourite buildings we’ve worked on. It was a kind of manifesto for using ordinary materials, readily available, and ‘unfinished’ in the way that the plaster was left bare in the knowledge that the marks and patina from the life of the studio would come to ‘be’ the finish and be immeasurably more interesting than anything we could apply.
— Piers Taylor, Invisible Studio
The European Commission is proud to be associated with Room 13, a project that really makes a difference… These children are the future of the area and when you see what they are generating and how their enormous potential is being realized, you know this is an investment worth making and supporting.
— Mr Reijo Kemppinen, Head of the European Commission offices in the UK
