Management team

Room 13 Hareclive is run by us, the children that use the studio, working with the adult team. Every year, a new team of 12-15 children from Years 5 and 6 (age 9-11) is appointed by the previous team. Together we order materials, run a shop, keep the space tidy, manage projects, write emails, raise funds, solve problems and make sure the studio is working for everyone. Around the table we have a real mix – makers, thinkers and doers alongside our artist in residence. Your ability to be in the team does not depend on your school work. There is a lot of learning on the job.

Children set the rules in Room 13 and you are not forced to do anything, you are free to choose. It is the opposite of stressful. If there is a problem to be solved, like if someone draws or paints on someone else’s work, the Management Team discuss and decide what to do. The team is always aware of the community of children and their feelings and we give a lot of thought to it.

Being in the Management Team teaches you confidence, independence and leadership skills, including how to get others to do what is needed. It teaches you responsibilities you would not get otherwise. It’s a real chance. We know it is a very different school experience.

Room 13 is not a pretend project. I can develop my writing skills, I can use my skills at talking in a very real way with all sorts of people, I can help grow something and be part of a community”

“Room 13 gives young people a voice and opportunities. Opportunities we would not usually have. It draws out all the good things in a person bringing it to the surface.
